New Year’s Day Yoga Workshop

Sankalpa Shakti: The Power of Inspired Intention

January 3rd, 2016 – 1-4 pm at One Yoga

Transitions in life – such as the New Year – awaken the human inclination for self-reflection. Any time we return to the eternal questions “Who am I?” and “How do I wish to live?”, is an auspicious time for yoga and spiritual inquiry. The New Years Yoga Workshop is an annual tradition of reflection and envisioning to support our inquiry.

This year we will explore the power of Sankalpa or “Inspired Intention”. It is not just any intention; it is a vow of heartfelt desire and willful determination. Sankalpa is a statement of guidance from our Highest Self, revealed through listening to our inner wisdom. By allowing us to see clearly what we really seek, Sankalpa empowers the mind to move from intention to realization.

Winter Retreat : The Four Desires  –

Ely Mn, January 15-18, 2016

buddha bodhi tree

( The retreat will begin Friday evening and end on Monday, MLK Day)

Join us for our first annual winter retreat at Camp du Nord, outside Ely, Minnesota.  Winter is a sacred time of turning inward to find the light within.  The quietness and stillness of north country are the perfect environment for this work.  Plus you’ll have free time for sitting by the fire, cross country skiing and sauna.
According to the yoga tradition, our lives are the product of our deepest driving desires. Yoga identifies four universal desires: Meaning, Prosperity, Joy & Freedom. These are known as the purusharthas – the means of the soul. These fundamental longings compel all human thought, action and behavior. In our modern world of instant gratification, we tend to misdirect the power of these desires -seeking fleeting pleasures- rather investing in the life’s work of Self-Realization. Only to find we are unfulfilled, unsatisfied and left wanting more. The life you are called to requires your conscious attention, dedication and effort. You must walk the path of your destiny.

The key to desire empowering us is to see clearly what we really want, and to work skillfully and selflessly toward its realization.

In this special winter retreat, you will be guided through a profound and transformative introspective process, as laid out by Rod Stryker in his book “The Four Desires.”  We will use teachings, yoga postures, breathing and meditation practices, chanting, self-reflection and journaling to:

  • Uncover the soul’s purpose – your reason for being in this life
  • Rediscover how each of the four desires resonates uniquely in your life
  • Recognize self-limiting patterns which keep you from fulfilling your potential
  • Learn to use these “obstacles” as a means to self-transformation
  • Create a vow of tangible action toward the realization of our calling
  • Learn techniques and practices for personal empowerment and self-mastery
  • Explore the power of right desire to transform your life and the world

“The AYS program with Ben Vincent literally changed my life.  I went into it with mixed feelings, not sure what to expect and a bit intimidated.  It turned out to be one of the most rewarding and impactful events I have ever participated in. I still practice, almost daily, many of the tools for a richer life that I learned in the program.”    ~ Audrey C.

“For me, the AYS program was a profound and life-changing experience led by a profound and life-changing teacher.  I got a whole new set of tools to help me live my life joyfully and in harmony with my best self.  One of the unexpected benefits was developing a wonderfully supportive community of fellow yogis.  I highly recommend this class to anyone serious about cultivating both a deeper understanding of themselves and of yoga.”     ~ Beth G.

“I studied yoga for over fifteen years prior to taking part in the yoga studies program, and the program gave me a foundation and depth of understanding that I did not have from all of my previous study.  Ben is an intensely serious student of yoga and a gifted teacher. He is able to break down postures and anatomy, and has a unique ability to teach yoga as a philosophical system that can help us to shape a more meaningful and fulfilling life.”      ~ Katrin C.

I would like to thank you Ben for the time, effort, love and devotion that you have put into developing this extraordinary advanced yoga studies program. The quality and depth of the program  was beyond my expectations and has provided me with a deep insight and inspiration for myown transformational process. New Years Day Yoga Workshop: Harnessing the power of desire to shape our destiny

The turn of the calendar awakens the natural human inclination for self-reflection.  The question, “have I lived well?”, crosses all of our minds in some form.   From the yogic perspective, both the longing to realize our fullest potential, and the conditioned patterns of thought and behavior that keep us stuck, are based in desire.   Since almost all of us have fallen into the cycle of unfulfilled resolutions -resulting in feelings of failure and guilt- it is worth exploring the phenomenon of desire more deeply.  In the 3rd annual New Year’s Day Yoga Workshop, we will explore the teaching that our lives are the product of our deepest desires.

Learn More

In the yogic tradition, there are four desires said to be universal to all humans. The search for meaning, prosperity, pleasure and freedom compels all of our actions, conscious and otherwise. Cumulatively known as the purusharthas, these four desires are a map to a life of balance and fulfillment. How we pursue desire determines whether they will be a source of suffering or the catalyst to freedom. In this workshop, we will:

  • Learn the teaching of the purusharthas: The human search for meaning, prosperity, pleasure and freedom
  • Explore our unique search for the four desires
    • Practice postures, breathing, meditation and chanting to support self-inquiry
    • Explore how desires are influenced by the ego and the higher self

Awakening the Heart & Mind:

Essential Teachings of The Yoga Sutra

A 6 week-series:  Tuesday Sept. 25 – Oct. 30   7:00-8:30 at One Yoga

Yoga is the quintessence of the human search for meaning, freedom and joy in life.  Its teachings have come through the ages as a means to help humanity realize its fullest potential. Composed 2,000 years ago, The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali is one the most essential and comprehensive texts on yoga philosophy and practice. It is a map to guide us from suffering and fear to lives of freedom and love.  Offering timeless teachings on how to awaken the capacities of the human heart and mind, The Yoga Sutra is as relevant today as when it was written.

This special six-week series is intended for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of themselves through yoga.  Each class will consist of a dharma talk (an engaging lecture on the teachings), guidance and practice of meditation & self-reflection, and time for Q + A.   There will be reading, journaling and meditation practices for guided home-study.

Yoga Therapy for a Healthy Neck, Shoulders and Upper Back

Sat Date: Sep 29, 2012 From: 01:30 PM to 04:00 PM

Anyone who has practiced yoga knows that there is a lot going on in the neck and shoulders. For many practitioners, it’s a place of chronic pain from past injuries, our daily modern lifestyle, and/or misalignment in yoga practice.
From the anatomic and energetic perspective, the shoulders, upper thoracic and cervical spine form the link between the heart center (humanity and compassion), the throat center (our voice) and the third eye (intuition, wisdom, higher intelligence). The function of these areas greatly influences our respiratory, endocrinal and central nervous systems, our cognitive motor skills, not to mention vinyasas, inversions and backbends. Because the shoulder is the most mobile joint(s) in the body, it is highly susceptible to injury, weakness and misalignment. As with all things, the ideal for the neck and shoulders is the middle path, both stability and mobility.
In this workshop we will:
  • Explore anatomy/physiology of the neck and shoulders
  • Learn principles of alignment which create stability and mobility
  • Practice therapeutic postures and sequences for home practice
  • Use breathing and meditation techniques to support deeper healing of the neck and shoulders.

Early registration discount before Sept. 22…For information on rates and registration, please visit one yoga’s website

Opening the Hips

Thurs Oct. 18th, 7:00-9:30pm at One Yoga

Anyone who has practiced yoga knows there is a lot going on in the hips and pelvis.

For many practitioners the hips are a source of tension from our daily modern lifestyle and its effects. Whether you are a yogi/ athlete who loves to move, a yogi/ meditator who loves to sit, or both, range of motion in the hips greatly affects the entire human system.

From both the anatomic and energetic perspectives, the pelvis unites the legs (our connection to the earth) and our spine (the central channel of the energetic and nervous system of the body). The pelvis and hip joints are known to store deep emotions from our past, and greatly influence our physical and energetic systems of elimination, creation, procreation and assimilation. Tightness around the pelvis is also a primary cause in lower back and knee pain.

In this class, we will learn a specific series designed to open all the major muscles of the hip joints. We will also explore anatomy, postures, breathing and mediation techniques which help to open the hips, to support ideal functioning of the systems of the pelvis and lower torso. Handouts will be included. All levels of experience are welcome.

To register for this event, please follow this link: Opening the Hips

January 26th-29th: Thurs. 7:00-9:30 pm, Fri. 7:00-9:30 pm, Sat. 10:00-1:30 pm and 2:30-5:00, Sun. 11:30-2:00 and 3:00-4:30

Winter Weekend Yoga Immersion:The Yoga of Desire, Harnessing the Soul’s Power to Shape our Destiny

As is the desire, so I our will,

As is the will, so is our deed,

As is the deed, so is our destiny

                                                          -Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

According to the yogic tradition, our lives are the result of our deepest desires. Both the longing to realize our fullest potential and the conditioned patterns of thought and behavior that keep us stuck, are based in desire.   In many spiritual traditions, desire is considered to be a primary cause of suffering or even a sin.  Yet all living beings have desire- it is the force that compels our actions, calling us to live fully.  The tantric yoga traditions recognize that desire can be channeled for the realization of our soul’s purpose, but it can also be a source of suffering. The key is to clarify what we really want, and work skillfully and selflessly toward its realization.

Learn More

What do you really want? The yoga traditions identify four fundamental desires shared by all humans. The desire for Meaning, Prosperity, Pleasure & Freedom (purusharthas) are the means of the soul, compelling all human thought, action and behavior. In our modern world of instant gratification, we tend to misdirect the power of these desires- seeking fleeting pleasures- rather investing in the life’s work of Self-Realization. Only to find we are unfulfilled, unsatisfied and left wanting more. The life you have dreamt of requires your conscious attention, dedication and effort. You must walk the path of your destiny. In this special weekend intensive, you will be guided through a profound and practical introspective process, as laid out by Rod Stryker in his book “The Four Desires.” We will:

  • Explore the role of desire in life and spiritual practice
  • Rediscover how each of the four desires manifest uniquely in your life
  • Uncover the soul’s purpose- your reason for being in this life
  • Recognize self-limiting patterns and tendencies which keep us from fulfilling our potential
  • Learn to use these “obstacles” as a means to self-transformation
  • Create a vow of tangible action toward the realization of our calling
  • Understand Karma, mind, and learn tools for self-mastery
