New Year’s Day Yoga Workshop
Sankalpa Shakti: The Power of Inspired Intention
January 3rd, 2016 – 1-4 pm at One Yoga
Transitions in life – such as the New Year – awaken the human inclination for self-reflection. Any time we return to the eternal questions “Who am I?” and “How do I wish to live?”, is an auspicious time for yoga and spiritual inquiry. The New Years Yoga Workshop is an annual tradition of reflection and envisioning to support our inquiry.
This year we will explore the power of Sankalpa or “Inspired Intention”. It is not just any intention; it is a vow of heartfelt desire and willful determination. Sankalpa is a statement of guidance from our Highest Self, revealed through listening to our inner wisdom. By allowing us to see clearly what we really seek, Sankalpa empowers the mind to move from intention to realization.

Winter Retreat : The Four Desires –
Ely Mn, January 15-18, 2016
( The retreat will begin Friday evening and end on Monday, MLK Day)
Join us for our first annual winter retreat at Camp du Nord, outside Ely, Minnesota. Winter is a sacred time of turning inward to find the light within. The quietness and stillness of north country are the perfect environment for this work. Plus you’ll have free time for sitting by the fire, cross country skiing and sauna.
According to the yoga tradition, our lives are the product of our deepest driving desires. Yoga identifies four universal desires: Meaning, Prosperity, Joy & Freedom. These are known as the purusharthas – the means of the soul. These fundamental longings compel all human thought, action and behavior. In our modern world of instant gratification, we tend to misdirect the power of these desires -seeking fleeting pleasures- rather investing in the life’s work of Self-Realization. Only to find we are unfulfilled, unsatisfied and left wanting more. The life you are called to requires your conscious attention, dedication and effort. You must walk the path of your destiny.
The key to desire empowering us is to see clearly what we really want, and to work skillfully and selflessly toward its realization.
In this special winter retreat, you will be guided through a profound and transformative introspective process, as laid out by Rod Stryker in his book “The Four Desires.” We will use teachings, yoga postures, breathing and meditation practices, chanting, self-reflection and journaling to:
- Uncover the soul’s purpose – your reason for being in this life
- Rediscover how each of the four desires resonates uniquely in your life
- Recognize self-limiting patterns which keep you from fulfilling your potential
- Learn to use these “obstacles” as a means to self-transformation
- Create a vow of tangible action toward the realization of our calling
- Learn techniques and practices for personal empowerment and self-mastery
- Explore the power of right desire to transform your life and the world

Opening the Hips
Thurs Oct. 18th, 7:00-9:30pm at One Yoga
Anyone who has practiced yoga knows there is a lot going on in the hips and pelvis.
For many practitioners the hips are a source of tension from our daily modern lifestyle and its effects. Whether you are a yogi/ athlete who loves to move, a yogi/ meditator who loves to sit, or both, range of motion in the hips greatly affects the entire human system.
From both the anatomic and energetic perspectives, the pelvis unites the legs (our connection to the earth) and our spine (the central channel of the energetic and nervous system of the body). The pelvis and hip joints are known to store deep emotions from our past, and greatly influence our physical and energetic systems of elimination, creation, procreation and assimilation. Tightness around the pelvis is also a primary cause in lower back and knee pain.
In this class, we will learn a specific series designed to open all the major muscles of the hip joints. We will also explore anatomy, postures, breathing and mediation techniques which help to open the hips, to support ideal functioning of the systems of the pelvis and lower torso. Handouts will be included. All levels of experience are welcome.
To register for this event, please follow this link: Opening the Hips

Winter Weekend Yoga Immersion:The Yoga of Desire, Harnessing the Soul’s Power to Shape our Destiny
As is the desire, so I our will,
As is the will, so is our deed,
As is the deed, so is our destiny
-Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
According to the yogic tradition, our lives are the result of our deepest desires. Both the longing to realize our fullest potential and the conditioned patterns of thought and behavior that keep us stuck, are based in desire. In many spiritual traditions, desire is considered to be a primary cause of suffering or even a sin. Yet all living beings have desire- it is the force that compels our actions, calling us to live fully. The tantric yoga traditions recognize that desire can be channeled for the realization of our soul’s purpose, but it can also be a source of suffering. The key is to clarify what we really want, and work skillfully and selflessly toward its realization.
Learn More
- Explore the role of desire in life and spiritual practice
- Rediscover how each of the four desires manifest uniquely in your life
- Uncover the soul’s purpose- your reason for being in this life
- Recognize self-limiting patterns and tendencies which keep us from fulfilling our potential
- Learn to use these “obstacles” as a means to self-transformation
- Create a vow of tangible action toward the realization of our calling
- Understand Karma, mind, and learn tools for self-mastery
